Funeral Director Intern License
Supervised funeral-service internship license.
Licensing authority: state board of funeral and cemetery service · Application information
Extension of intern license
All of the following:
- Eligibility
- On expiration of an intern license, an additional one-year extension is available upon payment of the intern license fee and otherwise meeting IC 25-15-4-2.
- Initial term
- IC 25-15-6-1(b) establishes an initial two-year term; the current extension rule supplies an additional year.
- Score evidence
- Proof of the currently offered Arts and Sciences examinations remains part of the intern qualifications; the rule does not say a passing applicant must retake them.

All of the following:
- Application fee
- Pay the fee set by the Board.

- Provide the statutory evidence concerning disciplinary conduct and crimes bearing on competent practice.
- Documentation
- Education transcripts, positive-response explanations and supporting court documents, and proof of any name change are required by the Board application instructions.
- Employment
- Submit the funeral-home employment notification.
- Exam standard
- 832 IAC 3-2-2 publishes the two-part science/arts passing standard; an otherwise approved nationally recognized examination is an open Board-approved alternative condition, not an invented examination identity.
- Minimum age
- At least 18 years of age.
- National scores
- Successful completion of the National Arts and Sciences examinations before intern licensure; submit scores directly to the Board.
- Professional education
- Either 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of qualifying college work plus four academic quarters or equivalent of Board-approved mortuary science, or a Board-approved 21-month mortuary-science program.

- Supervision
- Work under direct supervision of a licensed funeral director.

- Submit completed renewal application and the applicable renewal and reinstatement fees.

Probationary Funeral Director License
Funeral director license issued with Board-imposed probationary limitations under applicable licensing discipline provisions.
Licensing authority: state board of funeral and cemetery service · Application information
Probationary issuance by examination
All of the following:
- Application fee
- Pay the fee set by the Board.
- Case reports
- Four quarterly reports are required within 30 days after each quarter. The Board accepts the examination application after the third quarter; issuance remains subject to completion of the internship and all reports.
- Criminal history
- Provide the statutory evidence concerning disciplinary conduct and crimes bearing on competent practice.
- Documentation
- Education transcripts, positive-response explanations and supporting court documents, and proof of any name change are required by the Board application instructions.
- Internship
- At least one year of continuous licensed internship under direct supervision, including 1,500 hours, assistance in 24 embalmings and in arrangement, service and disposition of 24 bodies.
- Minimum age
- At least 18 years of age.
- National score evidence
- Provide National Conference Examination scores; earlier passage remains examination evidence in this route.
- Probation
- Board may issue with probation after relevant prior discipline, disqualifying conduct or unlicensed practice; reporting, practice limitations, education and other corrective conditions may apply. The form of licence does not itself remove underlying examination qualifications.
- Professional education
- Either 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of qualifying college work plus four academic quarters or equivalent of Board-approved mortuary science, or a Board-approved 21-month mortuary-science program.
- Retakes
- After the third failed state examination, complete five hours of approved Indiana funeral-service-law education within 90 days before each additional attempt under current 832 IAC 3-2-4.
- Secondary education
- Diploma from an accredited high school.
Probationary issuance by reciprocity
All of the following:
- Education
- Submit education transcripts and meet substantially equal licensing requirements as determined by the Board.
- Fees and disclosures
- Submit the application fee, positive-response documentation, and name-change evidence required by the current instructions.
- License verifications
- Provide verification from every jurisdiction where a license is or has been held; a copy is insufficient.
- National scores
- The Board reciprocity application requires National Conference Examination scores. The currently offered Arts and Sciences exams remain leaves even when passed before applying.
- Prior license
- Hold a current, unrevoked, unsuspended out-of-state license with substantially equal qualifications, as determined by the Board; probation disqualifies under the rule.
- Probation
- Board may issue with probation after relevant prior discipline, disqualifying conduct or unlicensed practice; reporting, practice limitations, education and other corrective conditions may apply. The form of licence does not itself remove underlying examination qualifications.
- Waiver
- IC 25-15-4-5 permits the Board to waive the examination or supervised-practice requirement; 832 IAC 3-3-2(b) requires the state funeral director examination. The statutory permission alone does not establish a waiver.
