Lead Abatement Supervisor Certification
Certification for lead abatement supervisors with requirements for accredited training, a state certification examination, qualifying experience, and an application and fee.
Licensing authority: Texas Department of State Health Services · Application information
Alternative military licensing
- Alternative competency
- If DSHS requires competency demonstration, it may accept proof of passing any national examination required for the occupational license, qualifying professional experience or verified training hours (§1.91(f)). This generic national-exam slot identifies no specific nationwide examination.
- Application
- Submit a complete supervisor certification application and applicable fees within six months of passing the supervisor state examination (§295.208(b)(4)).
- Attempt limit
- Pass with at least 70% correct in no more than three attempts within six months of course completion; otherwise retake the original supervisor course before another attempt (§295.208(c)(3)–(5)).
- Business practice
- The certification covers the individual supervisor. A supervisor representing a business entity may also need Lead Firm certification under §295.211, as explained by the DSHS certification FAQ.
- Delayed application
- After six months from passing, complete a supervisor refresher course and apply within six months of that refresher; after three years without a complete application, meet the original requirements again (§295.208(c)(9)(A)–(B)). Section 295.205(c)(22) refers to one year after the additional refresher, while the discipline-specific §295.208(c)(9)(A) says six months; both statements are retained in the evidence and the six-month discipline-specific window is stated here.
- Experience
- One year of experience as a certified lead abatement worker OR at least two years of experience in a related field (such as lead, asbestos or environmental remediation) or the building construction trades (§295.208(b)(3)).
- Fee waiver
- No state license application or examination fees; third-party costs remain the applicant responsibility.
- Military eligibility
- A military service member, veteran or spouse holding a current other-state license similar in scope and in good standing.
- Out of state recognition
- Separately, §55.0041 permits a military service member or spouse with a similar current other-state license in good standing to practice without obtaining the Texas license, subject to the prescribed application, military orders, spouse documentation where applicable, affidavit, agency recognition and practice-duration conditions. That statutory recognition is a practice authorization rather than an additional supervisor examination.
- Registration
- Before the examination, submit the DSHS registration form, the supervisor training certificate and applicable documentation; receive confirmation for the particular examination and date (§295.208(c)(1)–(2)).
- Textual inconsistency
- §295.208(c)(9) says "lead inspector state examination" in a paragraph whose subject and subparagraphs explicitly concern the supervisor application and supervisor examination. This is treated as an application-timing reference, not the establishment of a second inspector-exam requirement for supervisors; §295.208(b)(2) identifies the supervisor examination.
- Training
- Successfully complete a lead abatement supervisor course from a DSHS-accredited training provider and receive the course completion certificate. The course is at least 32 hours, including at least eight hours of hands-on training; course tests and skills assessments are training completion conditions under §295.204, distinct from the DSHS state certification examination.
- Waiver discretion
- DSHS may waive any licensing requirement after reviewing the applicant credentials (§1.91(e)); any applicable examination waiver is individual discretion, so the identifiable supervisor examination remains referenced.

Renewal following military deployment
- Application
- Submit the complete renewal application, documentation and applicable fees; remain qualified and comply with all final orders. File at least 30 days before expiration for timely processing (§§295.205(h)(1), 295.208(e)(2)).
- Military extension
- A military service member on active duty has two additional years to complete renewal requirements, including continuing education, under §55.003; §55.002 exempts the late-renewal penalty when the qualifying failure to renew resulted from active-duty service outside Texas.
- Refresher training
- Complete the supervisor refresher training from a DSHS-accredited provider no sooner than 180 days before expiration; the course is at least eight hours and its course test is a training completion condition (§§295.208(e), 295.204(f)).

Reapplication after decertification
- Disciplinary wait
- Ineligible to reapply for three years after decertification; reapplication must meet current certification requirements and applicable final orders.
- Employment restriction
- Must be a DSHS employee conducting lead activity as a condition of employment; certification and examination fees are exempt. Practice is limited to required departmental duties. Return and close the credential immediately when the employment or certification requirement ends (§295.216(b)(2)).
- Experience
- One year of experience as a certified lead abatement worker OR at least two years of experience in a related field (such as lead, asbestos or environmental remediation) or the building construction trades (§295.208(b)(3)).
